The Australian Sponsor Visa Process
Employer-sponsored visas allow Australian businesses to bring skilled workers into the country to fill genuine skill shortages.
The employer takes on the legal responsibility for the worker’s sponsorship, while the employee must demonstrate their Work experience, qualification, and English language proficiency.
How the Process Works
Step 1: Employer Becomes an Approved Sponsor
The company must apply to the Department of Home Affairs to become a Standard Business Sponsor. This involves submitting business registration documents, financial records, and proving a track record of lawful operation. Once approved, the sponsorship is generally valid for five years, allowing the company to nominate foreign workers for different roles as needed.
Step 2: Employer Nominates the Position
The business nominates a job role, explaining why an overseas worker is needed. The role must be on the relevant skilled occupation list. The position must be advertised to prove there are no suitable local candidates (labour market testing). Offered salary must meet or exceed the market rate and the prescribed minimum. The employer submits a formal nomination application for the chosen worker.
Step 3: Employee Applies for the Visa
After successful nomination, the worker applies for the relevant visa subclass. Applicants must provide proof of qualifications, any required licensing or registration, and a positive skills assessment for many roles (exemptions apply). Applicants must show evidence of relevant work experience as well as English proficiency. Medical and police checks are required to meet health and character criteria.
Step 4: Decision and Compliance
Both the employer and employee must maintain visa and workplace obligations throughout the duration of the sponsorship. The employee must work in the nominated role and location. The employer must comply with fair work, record-keeping, and reporting standards. Breaches can lead to visa cancellations or penalties.

Sponsored Visa Types
Temporary Skill Shortage Visa – Subclass 482
The 482 visa is a temporary work visa valid from two to four years, depending on the occupation. It allows fast recruitment of skilled staff and can be a pathway to permanent residency. Skills required typically include at least one year of relevant work experience for the nominated occupation, with skills assessments sometimes required. The minimum English requirement is usually IELTS 5.0 overall or equivalent.
Employer Nomination Scheme – Subclass 186
This visa grants direct permanent residency. Applicants can enter via the Temporary Residence Transition stream after working under a 482 visa for a set period or the Direct Entry stream if they already meet the qualifications and professional standards. Skills assessment for the role and higher English proficiency—usually at least IELTS 6.0—is required. The 186 route provides immediate permanent residency.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 494
The 494 visa targets jobs in regional Australia and is provisional for up to five years. It offers a pathway to permanent residency after three years if conditions are met. The process is similar to other sponsor visas but may include additional requirements tied to living and working in designated regional locations. Skills assessment and IELTS 6.0 or equivalent are normally required.
All sponsor visas require employers to prove a genuine need for the overseas worker and to meet employment standards. Employees must satisfy strict skill, qualification, English language, health, and character requirements. While subclass 482 is temporary and quicker to get, subclass 186 allows direct permanent residency, and subclass 494 focuses on regional employment with a PR pathway after a qualifying period. Successful applications depend on thorough documentation and compliance by both employer and employee.
